路易斯•阿姆斯壯於1901年8月4日生於路易西安那州的紐奧良，七歲時就開始在街頭唱歌掙錢過活，後來因為紐澳良爵士大師King Oliver慧眼識英雄，讓路易斯•阿姆斯壯加入自己的樂團。
1923年路易斯•阿姆斯壯和Oliver合作灌錄了生平的第一張專輯，並且和樂團的鋼琴手(莉蓮哈定)結婚，在妻子的鼓勵和努力奔走之下，路易斯•阿姆斯壯組織了一個名為「阿姆斯壯五人熱奏Louis Armstrong and his Hot Fives」的樂團，也展開了路易斯•阿姆斯壯璀璨的爵士音樂生涯。
最初，路易斯•阿姆斯壯以演奏小號出名，到了1930年代，路易斯•阿姆斯壯音樂生涯中演唱的比重漸增，《Hello Dolly》、《What a Wonderful World》等等膾炙人口的經典名曲，讓他逐漸為世人所熟知。此外，路易斯•阿姆斯壯還跨足百老匯歌舞劇，甚至粉墨登場。5、60年代之後，阿姆斯壯很少吹奏樂器，大多以歌唱的面貌出現，1971年7月6日在紐約家中離開人間，結束他燦爛的一生。
